First let's chat about the essential supplies for every painting. Then I’ll share the five essential steps to beginning a great canvas painting.

Essential Supplies for Every Alcohol Ink On Canvas Painting

-safety gear: respirator mask, gloves, and ventilated working space

-primed canvas*

-risers

-rubbing alcohol, blending solution

-alcohol ink paint

-manipulation tools: hair dryer + extension cord, brushes, straws, etc. etc.

-spill items: paper towels, flat working surface, drop cloth

*A full lesson on Priming Alcohol Ink Canvas is available here. Course enrollment is now open!

Now let me share 5 Essential Start Steps to begin a great canvas painting.

5 Essential Start Steps to begin a great canvas painting

  1. Prepare surface for overflow (shower curtain liner, layers of paper towels)

  2. Place primed canvas on risers

    • The primed canvas is a crucial step that I’ve covered in the Canvas Course. Be sure you’ve watched the Priming Course Lesson and have primed your canvas the day before.

  3. Set up your paint and tools so you’re prepared to work fast and/or select tools on the fly. (Select colors and up cap bottles. Make sure all tools are within reach, plus hair dryer into an extension cord ) This is vital because the canvas will absorb your paint quickly. Having everything you need within reach will help you paint efficiently.

  4. Check the table tilt and adjust (pour alcohol on the canvas and watch which side it flows to. Stack paper towels under corners to make adjustment)

  5. Double your fluids

I hope you enjoyed this lesson learning the 5 Essential Ways to Begin a Great Canvas Painting. In the comments below, leave any questions you have.

Painting Alcohol Ink on Canvas vs. Yupo Paper - 5 Ways to Close the Gap

A four part blog series by Jenna Webb Art, an abstract painter specializing in over sized alcohol ink paintings on canvas

Part 3

Alcohol Ink CANVAS VS. YUPO PAPER, A Mini Lesson

If you are familiar with painting alcohol inks on yupo paper, then you’ve probably ran into several noticeable differences and frustrations when starting to paint inks on canvas. Amiright?

Maybe you discovered how the inks don’t flow as freely. The canvas absorbs the paint incredibly fast. It can be terribly frustrating and when you end up with a painting you hate. Especially if you spent a lot of time (and money) painting it. 😭

Well loves….

Understanding the differences between canvas and yupo will help you paint with more freedom and ease. In my Canvas Course I share the 🌟5 Ways I make canvas painting feel like working on glossy, flowy, yupo paper🌟 (which is beyond easier and less intimidating).

↓ Do you have any canvas vs. yupo questions? ↓

ALCOHOL INK ON CANVAS COURSE - BIG SECRETS REVEALED 😍💎 ➙ Find out more at https://jennawebbart.kartra.com/page/canvascourse

  • Prime - Alcohol inks work on non-porous surfaces and that's why yupo paper is so alcohol ink friendly; it’s plastic! On the flip side, canvas is ultra porous!  Most canvases come primed. But be careful, the canvas may say it’s primed but it must be primed for wet media. There is a massive difference. Refer to my other course lesson for a complete guide to priming for wet media and my secret priming weapon.

  • Lift - Use risers

  • Soak - Poor alcohol / blending solution generously.  My students’ biggest frustration with alcohol ink painting is the lack of flow.  You may notice little “fingers” developing in your work. Even when working on yupo paper I suggest using more alcohol and blending solution to help the flow.  This is even more crucial when working on canvas.

  • Color- Prepare to use more color than usual.  Buy large bottles of ink to save money. Dilute your colors in jars to extend their working time. The larger the surface, the more materials you will need.

  • Move - Assist the paint movement. The porous canvas will soak up liquid, while the yupo paper repels liquid like an umbrella.  Use a hairdryer with an extension cord to reach the entire canvas. Use a sculpting tool and brushes to move the paint around.

I hope this lesson makes your canvas painting process feel easier and as familiar as working with yupo paper.  Remember these five words:

Prime

Lift

Soak

Color

Move

In the comments below, share your biggest frustration with making the yupo to canvas transition.

How do crystals work?

As you know, I am fascinated and downright obsessed with COLOR and CRYSTALS.  Here’s why I incorporate these tools in my artwork and how it can benefit your life.

You know how a watch can operate from Quartz energy?  Specifically, certain crystals can act as resonators and transducers of electromagnetic energies.  Crystals can power watches, microphones and radios by the electromagnetic energies that flow through it.  That is amazing factual science!  So… it’s not far off to understand how a human can detect or feel the energy of a crystal.

It blew my mind to learn that our bodies are liquid crystals. Wait...what?

Yes...you heard correctly! Biophysicists are now suggesting that human begins and other organisms are liquid crystals. The human body and stones both have properties of crystallinity.

Holy. S***

So we really CAN feel the energy of a crystal. It makes sense!

Crystal and Color Synergy

Crystals are formed by the earth in a rainbow of colors.  Every crystal and color has synergy with our chakras, our bodies energy centers. I’m so fascinated by color in general, especially the way color interacts with us psychologically.  Color shapes everything we see and do. As soon as our eyes see something, our brains automatically code what we see thus instantly assigning meaning and evoking emotion.

Just as the human body is absorbs energy of the surrounding environment, humans also distribute energy into the universe. If you are anything like me, you believe that you create your reality.

It’s so important that your home feels that way you want it to FEEL, so that you are living the life you want to LIVE.

Your home should be personalized and flowing with love and positive energy. That's why I incorporate vibrant colors and my favorite crystals into my paintings.  Crystal energy and color psychology are great intuition tools and help us connect with our personal magic and share it with the world.

Color Theory and Crystals - An Inspired Tribute Painting

☽ ⋆ △ A Special Tribute Balancing Softness and Strength △ ⋆ ☽

Watch Me Paint

“African Violets” in tribute to Elsie Jackson - 16X20 inch alcohol ink and acrylic painting on yupo paper

She Radiated Love and Positivity Despite Her Circumstances

My granny passed at 97 years old with my parents by her bedside. What I find most amazing is how her positive spirit always prevailed.  She had many reasons to be ill or grumpy, curt or cold. A German lady who in her lifetime faced, poverty, abandonment, and Alzheimer's. But never was she unkind. She was a quiet and strong lady with a consistent smile and gratitude. Even if she didn't know who the hell you were at 97 she'd give you a smile and thank you over and over for a hug. She raised 4 kids alone and walked 5 miles to work to put food on the table. “You do what you have to do” she would say. I watched my parents care for Granny for 17 years in our home. She taught her son, my dad, unconditional love.  She never got bitter as she developed Alzheimer's disease. She was the sweetest lady ever. She was incredible.

☽ ⋆ △ THE INSPIRATION △ ⋆ ☽

COLOR THEORY AND CRYSTALS

I wanted to capture my Granny’s essence in this alcohol ink painting through a balance of softness and strength through color, contrast and crystal energy.

My creative process is intuitive so the most planning I do is color selection. The crystals were there to guide my intuition (especially amethyst) and channel my Granny's beautiful spirit as I painted and flowed. Behind my color choices:

VIOLET: her vibrant & resilient spirit

SKY BLUES and SOFT PINKS: her gentle heart

METALLIC GOLD:  Granny’s ability to see the gold shimmer lining in any situation

I channeled the energy of R O S E  Q U A R T Z  for love and  A M E T H Y S T  for positive energy.

Amethyst: the crystal connection to the African Violet, her favorite flower.

Rose Quartz: promotes self love and compassion, opens the heart chakra.

COLOR THEORY

Soft Pink: encourages friendliness, calm, tranquility

Sky Blue: calms and sedates, evokes rest

Purple: uplifts, offers a sense of spirituality

Gold:  generosity. compassion, optimism and positivity.

She's Complete

African Violets - Abstract Ink Painting Jenna Webb

Thanks for letting me share this special painting meditation with you! I hope it made you think of someone SOFT and STRONG in your life.
